Weight loss plateau on GLP-1 treatment: why a plateau happens and what works
Almost everyone stalls. Plateaus are physiology, not failure, and a short list of changes moves them.
Why plateaus happen #
Three mechanisms converge. Your smaller body burns fewer calories at rest. Appetite adaptation partially returns as the medicine reaches steady state. And portion creep, servings growing imperceptibly week by week, is nearly universal. A plateau is usually all three, not a mystery.
Check these before changing anything #
- The trend, not the week. Daily weight fluctuates 1 to 2 kg with water, salt and hormones. Judge the 4-week trend only.
- Waist and clothes. Recomposition, fat down, muscle up, can stall the scales while your body visibly changes.
- Cycle timing. Premenstrual water retention stalls readings for a week monthly. Compare like with like across your cycle.
The changes which work #
- Protein audit. Most plateaus come with protein quietly halved. Return to target for two weeks before anything else.
- Plain portions. Weigh food for one week, not forever, to recalibrate what a portion became.
- Add movement before cutting food. An extra 3,000 steps a day breaks more plateaus than further restriction, and protects muscle.
- Sleep. A fortnight of proper sleep moves stalled scales more often than any supplement.
- Dose review. If the above hold and 4+ weeks of true stall persist, your prescriber may step the dose up, the ladder exists for this.
What not to do #
- Do not slash calories below 1,200, muscle loss and rebound follow.
- Do not double doses or inject early. The schedule exists for safety.
- Do not judge a plateau at week two.
Sometimes a plateau is the destination #
If you are near a healthy weight, free of side effects, and your body will not go lower, you may have reached your set point. This is not a problem to solve. Your prescriber can help you decide whether to push on or move into maintenance, which is a success, not a failure.
