How the Wegovy pill works

Oral semaglutide is the same molecule as the Wegovy pen. The tablet includes an absorption enhancer, so the medicine survives the stomach and enters the bloodstream.

In the OASIS 4 trial, the 25 mg tablet produced an average loss of 13.6% over 64 weeks, against 2.2% with placebo. The 2.4 mg pen averaged 14.9% over 68 weeks in a separate trial.

Side effects match the pen: nausea, constipation, reflux and tiredness, with similar rates in trials. Read the side effects guide.

Wegovy pill doses and prices

Tablets follow the same approach as the pen. Start at 1.5 mg, then 4 mg, 9 mg and 25 mg. Each step lasts at least 1 month, and you move up only if the current dose is tolerated.

    Empty stomach

Take your tablet first thing, before food or drink.

  2. 2

    Small sip of water

Swallow the tablet whole with no more than half a glass of water, about 120 ml. Do not split, crush or chew.

  3. 3

    Wait 30 minutes

Wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else, or taking other medicines.

  4. 4

Side effects and safety

Why people choose the tablet

No needles and no sharps bin. Room-temperature storage means no fridge space and easier travel. A blister pack draws no attention.

Get urgent help

Severe stomach pain reaching your back, swelling of the face or throat, trouble breathing, or vomiting so severe you keep no fluids down. Call 999 or go to A&E. For other concerns call 111.

If the routine feels hard

The weekly Wegovy pen or the Foundayo pill, with no fasting rule, may suit you better. Your prescriber can switch your plan.

Report any suspected side effect through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme. Read the patient leaflet in your pack before your first dose.

Wegovy pill questions

How much does the Wegovy pill cost?

Aero’s treatment prices are not yet confirmed. Before paying, ask for the total price, pack quantity, prescribing fees, dispensing and delivery charges, and follow-up costs. Use your provider’s written quote in the cost planner.

Are the tablets as effective as the pen?

The results are close. In OASIS 4, the 25 mg tablet averaged 13.6% loss at 64 weeks. In STEP 1, the 2.4 mg pen averaged 14.9% at 68 weeks. These were separate trials. The daily routine is the trade-off for going needle-free.

What if I forget a tablet?

Skip the missed tablet and resume your usual dose the next day. Do not take an extra tablet to make up for it. Check the patient leaflet and ask your pharmacist if you are unsure.

Can I switch between the pen and tablets?

A switch needs a prescriber’s instructions for your current treatment and dose. Tablets and injections are not interchangeable milligram for milligram. Our tablets and pen comparison explains practical differences; ask your clinician to confirm the changeover plan.
