Hair loss and weight loss: why shedding happens and when your hair grows back
Extra shedding a few months into rapid loss is common, temporary, and almost always regrows. The plain explanation.
What is happening #
The shedding people notice on GLP-1 treatment is almost always telogen effluvium, a temporary shift of hair into the resting phase. Rapid weight loss triggers the shift, not the medicine. Hair follicles read major physiological change (fast loss, surgery, illness, childbirth) as a signal to pause production. The shed hairs were already scheduled to fall. The trigger synchronised them.
The typical timeline #
- Months 3 to 6 of active loss: shedding peaks, often noticed in the shower or brush.
- Months 6 to 9: shedding slows as weight stabilises.
- Months 9 to 12: regrowth becomes visible, short new hairs along the hairline first.
The shedding looks alarming and feels worse, but the follicles are dormant, not dead.
What helps #
- Hit your protein target, hair is built from protein, and shortfall prolongs shedding. See the protein guide.
- Do not crash-lose, a steadier pace of loss triggers less shedding than the fastest possible descent.
- Check iron, ferritin, thyroid and B12 with your GP if shedding is severe or persistent. A deficiency makes shedding worse and is easy to correct.
- Be gentle: loose styles, minimal heat, no tight ponytails while hair is fragile.
When to get your hair loss checked #
Patchy loss, scalp itching or redness, eyebrow loss, or shedding continuing beyond a year after weight stabilised all warrant a GP visit. Those patterns suggest something other than telogen effluvium.
