Life after GLP-1 treatment
The first year off treatment is different: returning appetite, a changing identity, and questions nobody warned you about. A plain guide.
Appetite in month one and month six #
Appetite returns gradually over 4 to 6 weeks after your last dose. Most people describe a slow rise, not a sudden rush: snacks become interesting again and portions creep up. By month three, the new normal is established: your habits now do the work the medicine did. People who built structure during maintenance describe this as manageable. People who rely on willpower alone describe month two as the hardest.
The identity shift #
Losing 15 to 20% of your body weight changes your daily life: clothes, compliments, energy, sometimes relationships. Some people grieve the person they were. Others struggle with attention they never asked for. Both are normal. If food was how you coped with feelings, you need to build new ways to cope. Start with the emotional eating guide.
The body questions #
Loose skin depends on how much you lost, your age, and how fast the weight came off. Slow loss and muscle building reduce loose skin. Significant laxity calls for a surgical conversation, not a cream. Hair shedding (telogen effluvium) peaks around months 3 to 6 of rapid loss and regrows. See the hair loss guide. Strength lost during dieting is rebuildable, and rebuilding strength is the most valuable project in maintenance.
Long-term monitoring #
After discharge from active maintenance, your safeguards stay in place: a standing agreement for a check-in when your weight drifts 2 to 3 kg, and an annual review of weight, blood pressure and, if relevant, blood sugar with your GP. Weight management takes years, and long-term care needs someone checking in.

Social life and eating out #
Restaurant portions will look enormous forever now. You are not being difficult. Your recalibrated appetite is meeting an oversized food environment. Practical norms which help: order a starter as your main, ask for half-portions without apology, and decide about dessert after the main, not before.
