What a maintenance dose is #

A maintenance dose is the ongoing dose specified in a treatment plan after initial dose escalation. It is not necessarily lower than the dose used during weight loss. Obesity can require continuing care, including nutrition, activity and psychological support where appropriate.

Licensed maintenance doses #

For adults, the UK Mounjaro product information recommends maintenance doses of 5, 10 or 15 mg once weekly. Intermediate strengths are escalation steps, not the listed recommended maintenance doses. Mounjaro SmPC, section 4.2.

For Wegovy injections, the usual maintenance dose is 2.4 mg weekly. In eligible adults with obesity, a prescriber may increase to 7.2 mg after at least 4 weeks at 2.4 mg if needed. Wegovy SmPC, section 4.2.

Tablet and injection doses are not interchangeable. Consult the Wegovy tablet product information or Foundayo product information for the relevant regimen. A prescription outside a licensed regimen needs an individual clinical rationale and a discussion of uncertainty.

Dose spacing #

Do not extend injection intervals, take tablets on alternate days or split doses to create your own maintenance plan. These changes may be outside the licensed regimen. This website does not provide a dose-spacing schedule; discuss any proposed change with your prescriber.

How you and your prescriber choose #

A review should consider health outcomes, weight trend, nutrition, side effects, other medicines, affordability and your preferences. Agree what to monitor and when to seek advice. A lower price alone does not establish that a lower or less frequent dose is clinically appropriate.

Coming off maintenance #

If you want or need to stop, agree a follow-up plan with your prescriber. Weight regain can occur after withdrawal despite ongoing effort. Do not restart at a previous dose after a break without advice. Read planning a treatment change or stop.
