Changing or stopping GLP-1 treatment

There is no universal taper schedule in the product information cited here. Plan any dose reduction or stop with your prescriber, including follow-up and support if appetite or weight changes.

Discussing a treatment change #

Talk through why you want to change treatment: side effects, cost, pregnancy plans, health changes or your preferences. Review your other medicines and any diabetes care. If you have a serious suspected reaction, follow the urgent advice in your leaflet rather than waiting to complete a taper.

What the evidence can tell us #

The SURMOUNT-4 and STEP 4 trials compared continuing treatment with switching to placebo. They show a risk of regain after withdrawal; they do not establish that a particular taper prevents it.

This page therefore does not prescribe a sequence of lower doses or a timetable for stopping. Any individual plan should explain its rationale, limitations and monitoring.

Medicine-specific considerations #

Do not assume that tablets leave the body faster than injections: the active medicine matters. Oral and injected semaglutide are both semaglutide. Do not switch formulations, take tablets on alternate days or stretch injection intervals without a prescribing decision. Pregnancy wash-out periods differ; see pregnancy and contraception.

Tell your prescriber how long you have been off treatment before restarting. Your previous dose may no longer be appropriate.

Support alongside a change #

Agree a realistic eating and activity plan, access to support, and review dates. Discuss how to monitor weight and health without increasing distress. Regain is a reason to review care, not evidence of personal failure. Continuing treatment may remain an appropriate option.
