Stopping Mounjaro: planning for weight changes
Stopping tirzepatide carries no withdrawal danger. The risk is appetite returning faster than your habits can adjust. Here is how we manage the transition.
What happens when you stop #
Appetite and weight can change as the medicine wears off. Withdrawal trials found more weight regain after stopping than with continued treatment. They do not show that a particular taper or habit plan guarantees prevention of regain. Your follow-up plan should account for your health and preferences.
Planning a stop #
Agree any change with your prescriber. This page does not recommend a dose-by-dose taper, extended injection gaps or a switch to tablets as a stopping strategy. See the evidence and limits of tapering. If treatment also supports diabetes care, your glucose monitoring and other medicines may need review.
Agreeing follow-up #
There is no single timetable suitable for everyone. Agree when to review your health, appetite, weight and any symptoms, and who to contact earlier if problems develop. Do not restart at your previous dose without a prescribing review.
If weight starts returning #
Contact your prescriber if your weight trend or health concerns you. Review the causes and available support together. Restarting, switching or changing a dose requires an individual assessment, including the length of any treatment gap.
Long-term care #
Weight management may need long-term care, with or without medicine. Regain is not a personal failure. Discuss sustainable options and support with your clinician.
