Blood pressure and weight loss treatment: what to expect

Stethoscope on a desk

Blood pressure usually improves as weight falls, sometimes fast enough for tablets to need adjusting. What to watch.

The improvement pattern #

Losing 10% of body weight typically lowers systolic blood pressure by 5 to 10 mmHg, comparable to adding a blood pressure tablet. In GLP-1 trials, average readings improved steadily through the weight loss phase, and the SELECT trial showed semaglutide reduced major cardiovascular events by 20% in people with existing heart disease.

If you take blood pressure tablets #

Improvement can arrive quickly enough for your existing dose to become too much. Watch for dizziness on standing, light-headedness after exercise and unusual fatigue. Do not adjust tablets yourself. Tell your GP, who may reduce the dose. Aero’s prices are not yet confirmed.

Blood pressure as an eligibility condition #

Hypertension is one of the weight-related conditions which qualify you for treatment at a BMI of 27 to 30. Mention your readings and medicines in the health check. They count, and they also shape which treatment your prescriber recommends.

Habits which multiply the benefit #

  • Protein-forward, vegetable-rich eating naturally trims salt.
  • Daily walking lowers readings independently of weight.
  • Alcohol reduction, common anyway on GLP-1 treatment, lowers pressure further.
  • Home readings, morning and evening for a week each month, beat occasional clinic numbers for spotting trends.
