Menopause and weight: GLP-1 treatment through the menopause years
Weight gathers differently after 40, hormones, muscle and sleep all shift. How treatment fits this life stage.
Why weight gathers in the menopause years #
Falling oestrogen shifts fat storage toward the abdomen, muscle mass declines faster, sleep fragments (and short sleep raises hunger hormones), and metabolic rate drifts down. The result: the same eating which maintained weight at 35 gains weight at 48. None of this is a willpower failure. The cause is physiology.
Does GLP-1 treatment work as well? #
Trial data includes substantial numbers of perimenopausal and postmenopausal women, and weight loss outcomes are comparable to younger groups. The medicines work on appetite pathways which menopause does not blunt. Eligibility rules are identical. Age up to 75 is within our criteria.
HRT considerations #
HRT and GLP-1 treatment commonly coexist. Two practical notes: oral HRT tablets are among the medicines whose absorption tirzepatide can theoretically reduce, patches or gels sidestep this entirely, and weight loss can change oestrogen needs, so HRT reviews belong in the conversation with your GP.
Muscle and bone: the twin priorities #
After menopause, muscle loss accelerates and bone density falls. Rapid weight loss without protection compounds both. This makes the maintenance habits, protein at the top of the range and resistance training twice a week, more important here than at any other life stage. Weight-bearing exercise protects bone while the weight comes off.
Sleep as treatment #
Night sweats and fragmented sleep raise ghrelin and leave you less willing to cook well. Treating sleep is a form of weight management. Keep a cooler room and a consistent schedule, and ask for an HRT review if night symptoms drive the problem. The sleep guide has the protocol.
