PCOS and weight loss treatment: why GLP-1s are being studied
PCOS makes weight harder to shift. The biology, the evidence, and what treatment looks like.
Why PCOS makes weight harder #
Polycystic ovary syndrome couples insulin resistance with elevated androgens. This combination increases appetite, favours abdominal fat storage, and reduces the return on diet and exercise. Women with PCOS often describe doing everything right and losing slowly. This experience is real and has a biochemical basis.
What the evidence shows #
GLP-1 medicines improve insulin sensitivity directly, which is why they are being actively studied in PCOS. Trials of liraglutide and semaglutide in women with PCOS show meaningful weight loss, improved insulin markers and, in some studies, more regular cycles. Research is ongoing. PCOS is not yet a licensed indication, but weight management with PCOS absolutely is, on the standard BMI criteria.
The fertility twist #
Weight loss in PCOS can restore ovulation, sometimes within months. This is welcome for many and a surprise for others. Pregnancies on GLP-1 treatment happen this way. These medicines must stop before conception, so reliable contraception and clear family-planning conversations are part of treatment. The pregnancy and contraception guide has the rules.
Practical treatment notes #
- Metformin, often prescribed for PCOS, combines safely with GLP-1s.
- Progress can be slower than trial averages, judge your trajectory over months, not weeks.
- Protein and resistance training carry extra weight here, because insulin resistance makes muscle protection doubly valuable.
- Tell your prescriber about any PCOS medicines, including inositol supplements.
